Lakeshore Entertainment
starring
by Ian Cocoran
September 4, 2006
By Hollywood standards, the Beverly Hills-based Lakeshore Entertainment is a mere small fry when compared with the big guns of Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox. Notwithstanding its obvious disadvantage in size, however, the independent studio that was founded a little more than 10 years ago has proven it can pack a surprising punch and now has an extensive library of titles that
includes the likes of Million Dollar

Baby, Runaway Bride and Arlington Road.
In keeping with its parent company's operation, the Lakeshore Entertainment website is a tight little affair that is very good at what it does, if rather limited in scope.
The online offering initially strikes a strong association with the Lakeshore brand by producing a subtle, grayscale, animated cameo of its signature theme, which culminates with the familiar young boy about to jump off a jetty. The homepage then arrives in glorious Technicolor.
Like any movie company website, the homepage of Lakeshore Entertainment is adorned with mini-posters and scrolling titles that trumpet its past and present portfolio, while the primary viewing area is reserved for the marketing of its most heavily promoted feature. Each title also has a small series of links behind it that will either lead users to the official site of the movie in question or enable them to download posters or images.

The two most heavily featured links on the homepage are dedicated to the “Lakeshore International Library” and Lakeshore Records. The former is an online database of over 500 feature films. Users can either browse or, after registering, download mini-posters. Lakeshore Records, on the other hand, is the independent music division of Lakeshore Entertainment. In addition to allowing users to check out soundtracks and new releases, the link provides access to the iTunes music store, where sound files can be purchased and downloaded.
The final noteworthy link on the homepage is devoted to the View Current Films section, where visitors can explore what’s coming up, what’s currently hot, or the best of the rest—at least as far as the Lakeshore library is concerned. Users should be aware, however, that the content is clunky in this small section; preloaded with images, the pages appear slowly.
All in all, Lakeshore Entertainment produces a nice little website that is certainly in keeping with the offline brand, but there’s room for improvement. While the content is appealing, it’s clear that Lakeshore is still building its business. The library and music sections are worthwhile extensions of the brand, but it would also be good to see more research and imagination come into play when the company’s core activities are the focus, especially if the firm wants to be seen in a light worthy of a prestigious film studio.
